‘Novak Djokovic needs to play at…’, says ATP legend

Wimbledon crowned Novak Djokovic for the seventh time, the fourth in a row. The former world number 1 did not play a flawless tournament, but once again proved to be the best over the five-set distance. The Serbian phenomenon has thus risen to 21 Grand Slams, detaching Roger Federer and reducing the gap that separates him from Rafael Nadal in the all-time ranking.

The 35-year-old from Belgrade also redeemed a season that risked turning into a real fiasco. Nole paid dearly for his choice not to get vaccinated against the Coronavirus and – after the Australian soap opera – he could be forced to give up even the US Open.

The ‘Djoker’ have lost several positions in the ATP rankings and are at serious risk of plummeting further in the coming months. The 21-time Grand Slam champion has already stated that he will not force the situation to enter the United States next month.

In an exclusive interview with the ‘Tennis365’ portal, John McEnroe praised Djokovic for his ability to overcome difficulties.

McEnroe talks about Djokovic
“It’s unfortunate that it’s come to this situation where it has been a train wreck for Novak Djokovic.

A total debacle. To the point where he way he was thrown out of Australia, are you kidding me? The way that all played out was just horrible, so I respect him even more that he has overcome these things. He has to be the most mentally tough player I’ve ever seen on a tennis court.

(Rafael) Nadal is the greatest effort player, but Djokovic is mentally unbelievable. What he is able to deal with and still to succeed at this extraordinary level”. McEnroe also suggested it would be “ridiculous” if Djokovic was denied the chance to play at the US Open next month due to his vaccination status.

“We have to sort this out,” he declared. “Djokovic needs to play at the US Open. Please, someone work out how we make this happen because we need this incredible champion there”. Former tennis player, commentator, and coach Mark Petchey weighed in on the Wimbledon final between Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios.

“It had everything that we wanted, I think it had a pretty, to be honest, a pretty focused Nick as well, I think he came out of the blocks incredibly calm, given the fact that it’s his first major final and obviously I think you always have to remember this is the surface that he obviously feels as though he’s got the best of winning a major on, also with that comes a little pressure, because he’s not necessarily going to get that many shots at other majors,” Petchey said.
