Plainsman’s Choice 2022 Best Female Athlete: Suni Lee

The Plainsman’s Choice votes are in, and freshman gymnast Suni Lee has been named the best female athlete.

Lee, who came to Auburn after a trip to the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics and a stint on Dancing with the Stars, earned gold, silver, and bronze medals for the United States. With her gold medal in the all-around competition, Lee is the fifth consecutive American gymnast to win this award.

Lee has been making waves for Auburn in her short time on campus. Along with collecting four perfect 10.0s, Lee was also named a first-team All-American in the all-around, bars, and beam and earned second-team All-American honors on the floor. She was named to the All-SEC team, the All-Freshman team for the conference, and was named SEC Freshman of the Year and the SEC bars champion.

Lee is ranked first nationally in the uneven bars and is tied for first on the balance beam with No.1 Oklahoma’s Ragan Smith. She is also ranked second in the all-around behind Olympic teammate and fellow freshman Jade Carey, who competes at Oregon State.

Lee and the rest of the Auburn team were set to take on NCAA championships this past weekend, April 14-16, in Fort Worth, Texas. Team semifinals took place in two sessions, with Auburn in the second semifinal at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday, April 14.
