Ash Barty’s former coach has revealed details of the life-changing text message Serena Williams sent to the Aussie at her lowest moment.

Ash Barty’s former coach has revealed details of the life-changing text message Serena Williams sent to the Aussie.

The message exposes the extraordinary comeback Barty has mounted to become the best player in women’s tennis after walking away from the sport burnt out.

As first reported by The Courier-Mail, former mentor Jim Joyce has revealed Williams sent a message to Barty begging her not to leave the sport in 2015.

“Ash was in a restaurant I think and Serena sent her a message saying ‘you are too good a player to retire … you have to come back,” he said.

Joyce said he had told people at the time if Barty did not return to the sport “it would be the greatest waste Australian tennis has ever seen”.

“That comment was proved right,” he added, according to foxsports.com.au.

Barty is now beginning to chase some of the immortal records Williams has set as the GOAT in women’s tennis.

Australia’s first women’s world number one since Evonne Goolagong-Cawley broke through for her second grand slam triumph at Wimbledon last year— and has since distinguished herself as the clear force in the game.

So dominant has she been that she ended 2021 as the top-ranked player for a third consecutive year, joining Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Williams Williams and Chris Evert as the only women to achieve the feat.

Barty will get a chance to add to her legacy when she steps onto Rod Laver Arena for the women’s final against Danielle Collins on Saturday night — hoping to become Australia’s first women’s singles champion at the Aussie Open since Chris O’Niel in 1978.
