Former world No. 4 James Blake joked he was young and foolish for thinking he might have a chance to beat Roger Federer in the 2006 ATP Finals. When Blake and Federer in the 2006 ATP Finals final in Shanghai, Federer claimed a routine 6-0 6-3 6-4 win over the American.

“I was still smiling because it was right before he absolutely thrashed me in the Shanghai finals. Silly me thought I might have a chance just because I was playing really well that week. So young and foolish,” Blake recalled on Twitter.

Federer named the GOAT by Nikolay Davydenko
“The greatest tennis player of my generation is Roger Federer, for me,” Davydenko said during his appearance on The Functional Tennis Podcast.

“Technically speaking, based on the forehand, his serve, his mentality on the court, the way he moves on the court. He is the guy who showed the world how tennis can be improved.” Davydenko said that a fit 40-year-old Federer would still be winning Majors.

“If Federer were still playing today in a fit condition against Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas, I think he would still be winning Grand Slams,” Davydenko said. Also, Davydenko reflected on Alexander Zverev naming Djokovic the greatest tennis player of all time.

“I remember Alexander Zverev saying Novak Djokovic was the greatest player of all time,” Davydenko said. “Maybe based on the number of titles. Maybe according to the Grand Slams and Masters titles. But technically I don’t like the way Djokovic plays.”

Davydenko had more praise for Federer. “Roger is still on top. After Djokovic, there is Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. These three guys are at the same level,” Davydenko said. “Well, Murray is still No. 4 because he did not win as many Grand Slams.”

Federer underwent a knee surgery last August. Federer is set to miss the Australian Open and French Open, while Wimbledon is in doubt.
