Greg Rusedski explains why it will be ‘harder’ for Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to win more Grand Slams

Greg Rusedski has warned Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal that the younger generation are “here now” and will make it difficult for them to add to their Grand Slam tallies.

Federer, Nadal and Novak Djokovic all jointly hold the record for most majors as they are on 20 each, but while Djokovic remains at the top of his game having won three Grand Slams in 2021, his two fierce rivals have endured an injury-disrupted campaign.

And it is not injuries and Djokovic standing in the way of Federer and Nadal as former British No 1 Rusedski feels players like Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas are also making their lives difficult.

“You’re talking about the younger generation, they’re here now. I mean, out of the Big Three it’s really the Big One left which is Novak who doesn’t seem to be going anywhere quite yet,” he told Express Sport.

“It’s harder for Federer and Nadal now because Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitsipas, those guys are starting to believe. They’ve come very, very close.

“Medvedev finally beat Djokovic in a Grand Slam final, Tsitsipas was two-sets-to-love up in the finals of the French when Novak came to win in five sets, and [Matteo] Berrettini was in the other final [Wimbledon] so we had no Federer, no Nadal, only Djokovic out of the Big Three in the finals of a major this year which is very unusual and unheard of in the last decade.”
